There are many difficult decisions a bride has to make for her wedding day. Makeup does not have to be one of them. For years I heard the same thing from many of my brides, “I want to look like myself but more polished.” As a result, I have perfected the barely-there natural makeup look so that brides can be themselves, only better.
Less is More
In the case of natural makeup, less really is more. The key that many brides and makeup artists forget is to work with your natural beauty, not cover it up and build it back up with products. What I do is highlight my brides’ favourite features by using a few select products and using an excellent prep routine.
Prep and Prime
Beautiful makeup starts with a beautiful base. To keep your skin as oil-free as possible throughout the day, and create a perfect canvas, be sure to gently exfoliate and hydrate your skin before applying makeup. By hydrating, you keep your skin from producing excess oil throughout the day which helps keep your makeup intact.
Once my bride’s skin is ready, I go in with Glossier Priming Moisturizer. This product works well with most skin types and gives your skin that subtle glow from within.
All About that Base
To even out the skin tone I use the Laneige BB Cushion Hydra Radiance with SPF 50. This product evens out skin tone but is sheer enough to let your natural skin peek through. I love this product for anyone who wants to see their freckles or natural glow under their makeup.
If you are someone who is looking for more coverage and some serious oil control, MAC Studio Fix Fluid with SPF 15, would be a great alternative. If you prefer a dewy finish over a matte finish, mix in two drops of MAC Prep & Prime Essential Oils to your foundation. It is made with grapefruit and chamomile so will smell great and do wonders for your skin.
After you have blended in your foundation, it is time for concealer. Glossier Stretch Concealer is a great product that gives you coverage while still mimicking the texture and look of bare skin. No cakey concealer here! Apply the product under the eyes to counteract darkness and shadows as well as to any spots that need extra coverage.
To finish off your base, apply your favourite blush to the apples of your cheeks. I love the way Glossier Cloud Paint blend into the skin. They are a gel-cream blush that blends beautifully when using your fingertips or a blending sponge.
To keep shine at bay in pictures I recommend applying a blot powder to the areas of the skin that tend to get oily. Fenty Invisimatte Blotting Powder is a great option for most skin tones and does not appear on the skin. You can also use a setting spray to lock everything down.
Bold Beautiful Brows
Now that you have a beautiful base, it is time to move onto the brows. Boy Brow by Glossier is a great product that enhances your natural brow while also keeping the hairs in place.
Brighten Your Eyes
If you want a natural look, you still can use eyeshadow. I like to blend a shadow slightly darker than your skin tone into the crease of the eye to create dimension. I then follow this up with eyeliner. When it comes to eyeliners, I tend to use deep browns such as MAC Teddy or Coffee, rather than black, as browns define the lash line without being too dark. Apply liner to the lash line and blend it out with a pencil brush or cotton swab for a softer appearance. Finish the eye off with your favourite waterproof mascara (because there may be tears at the ceremony!) to help define the lashes.
Prep for the First Kiss
The last thing to do is pick the right lipstick or gloss for you! For a natural lip, choose a colour that is similar to your lip shade or, if you have a deeper natural lip shade, select a product that is sheer. Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer by Fenty is a tremendous bridal colour that looks good on every skin tone and feels great on the lips. If you are not a gloss fan, another bridal favourite is Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk. It is a beautiful dusty-rose coloured lipstick and you can get it in a creamy or matte finish.
Natural Beauty that is All You
If you want a natural look on your wedding day then using these products and tips will help you create an effortless look that is brilliantly you. There are other options and products if you want to glam it up or be highlighted to the heavens, but if you just want to look and feel like yourself on your big day, then I would highly recommend trying these products for yourself.
